New Twist on the 5-Minute Rule


The 5-Minute Rule has been part of the fitness industry for many years. It simply implies that once you are in your workout place, you need to exercise for only 5 minutes and after that time, you can decide to quit. It’s pretty simple, yet very effective. The reason is because the hardest part about establishing a habit is the getting started part. But once you get “the ball rolling”, momentum takes over and off you go. If you’ve ever used this rule, which can be applied for any routine, you know exactly what I mean.

As easy as this may seem, the biggest obstacle for most is trying to get to their workout space, even if it’s in their home! The number one reason for this is because of time constraints.


However, what if we were able to put a different twist on the 5-Minute Rule? Well at Motivate Fitness, that’s exactly what we’ve done.


Unequivocally, the key to reaping the healthy benefits from exercise is consistency. In fact, it has been shown that an exercise routine can be as short as 15 minutes, as long as it is done daily (5 days per week). Unfortunately, many of us get wrapped up in this mindset of, exercise needs to be exhausting and long, however that is completely untrue and the wrong mindset.

So here’s the twist: try exercising for 5 minutes every two to three hours during the day and accumulate 15-20 minutes of exercise that way. We all have 5 minutes to spare here and there throughout the day so establish a habit of exercising during that time.



This doesn’t need to be anything more than getting up from your chair and doing a 5-minute circuit. The circuit can be as simple as going up and down the steps or doing some body weight squats, lunges and planks. Keep a kettlebell or dumbbell by your desk and do a few sets of swings, rows or presses. Again, nothing over complicated, the key is to just move for 5 minutes.
